Neck & Back Pain:
Over many years, our necks are subjected to repeated stress and minor injury. These injuries may not cause pain at the time of injury. However, repeated injuries add up, and can eventually result in degeneration of the cervical spine, causing neck pain. Most neck pain is due to degenerative changes that occur in the neck. The overall condition of the cervical spine usually determines how fast you recover from an injury, and whether your neck pain will become a chronic problem. For chronic neck pain, there may not be a quick fix or complete cure. You will need to work with your health care team to try to improve the problem causing pain and to slow down the degenerative process. The Chiropractic physician's role in the treatment of neck pain is to find the main causes that need treatment right away. He or she will also try to keep your neck pain from becoming a chronic condition by teaching you how to slow down the degenerative process and prevent further injury.
Headaches & Migraines: If you have a headache, it could be a symptom of a more serious problem. Do not ignore the warning signs by covering them up with medication.
There are four types of headache: vascular, muscle contraction (tension), traction, and inflammatory. The most common type of vascular headache is migraine. Migraine headaches are usually characterized by severe pain on one or both sides of the head, an upset stomach, and, at times, disturbed vision. Women are more likely than men to have migraine headaches. After migraine, the most common type of vascular headache is the toxic headache produced by fever. Other kinds of vascular headaches include "cluster” headaches, which cause repeated episodes of intense pain, and headaches resulting from high blood pressure. Muscle contraction headaches appear to involve the tightening or tensing of facial and neck muscles. Traction and inflammatory headaches are symptoms of other disorders, ranging from stroke to sinus infection. Like other types of pain, headaches can serve as warning signals of more serious disorders. This is particularly true for headaches caused by inflammation, including those related to meningitis as well as those resulting from diseases of the sinuses, spine, neck, ears, and teeth.
Chiropractic physicians have had great success treating patients with headaches. Tension headaches are the most common headache overall. Before you cover up the symptoms, let us help you solve the underlying problem. References: (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke)
Carpal Tunnel::
Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the hand, becomes pressed or squeezed at the wrist. The median nerve controls sensations to the palm side of the thumb and fingers (although not the little finger), as well as impulses to some small muscles in the hand that allow the fingers and thumb to move. The carpal tunnel - a narrow, rigid passageway of ligament and bones at the base of the hand ¾ houses the median nerve and tendons. Sometimes, thickening from irritated tendons or other swelling narrows the tunnel and causes the median nerve to be compressed. The result may be pain, weakness, or numbness in the hand and wrist, radiating up the arm. Although painful sensations may indicate other conditions, carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common and widely known of the entrapment neuropathies in which the body's peripheral nerves are compressed or traumatized.
Scoliosis:
The spine has normal curves when looking at it from the side. When looking at it from the front or the back it should be straight. Scoliosis is a curve or lateral deviation to the side.
Scoliosis is usually acquired during the growing years. It is very important for a child with scoliosis to receive the proper checkups to monitor the scoliosis using orthopedic exams and x-rays. Chiropractic treatment can be very effective in decreasing pain and improving the overall motion of the spine.
Sciatica:
The sciatic nerve is made up of five nerve roots that exit the spine in your low back. It is the longest and largest nerve in the body. It supplies nerves to the muscles and joints of your thigh, knee, leg and calve.
Sciatic is inflammation of the sciatic nerve. The pain can be severe and travel down you legs as well as up into your back. Sciatica can occur in one leg or both.
How do you treat it? Traditional medicine will try and numb the symptoms, while the Chiropractic approach is simple to get rid of the cause.
Arthritis:
Arthritis can be a debilitating disease with crippling side effects. While most arthritic damage is irreversible the degenerative process can often be slowed down. We have also had success decreasing pain and improving posture through Chiropractic manipulations, muscle retraining, and nutritional support
TMJ:
Far too many people suffer with TMJ problems. Often times there is a misalignment to the temperal mandibular joint (TMJ) that can cause clicking, pain and irritation making it hard to chew gum, food, or even talk. By simply removing the misalignment and retraining the supporting muscles, we can decrease the pain and irritation.
Asthma:
Asthma may be defined as a constriction of the airways due to smooth muscle contraction, increased mucous secretion, edema and inflammation of the mucous membranes in the airways. Many things can trigger asthma such as allergens, stress and exposure to cold. (3)
2,894 patients with asthma, allergies and hayfever had their spines adjusted and 92% of these patients had greatly improved or totally corrected their condition References: (The Human Engineering Spine Posture Institute - Japan) Fibromyalgia:
Fibromyalgia is an epidemic and disabling myofascial condition. The typical patient says he hurts all over, sleeps poorly, and feels chronically tired and depressed. There have been many studies that support Chiropractic treatment for patients suffering from fibromyalgia.
Dr. Frederick Wolfe, a respected rheumatologist, points out that chiropractic treatment helps these patients. Dr. Wolfe is a well-known investigator of fibromyalgia, and is clinical professor, Department of Medicine, University of Kansas School of Medicine. In 1985, he and his colleagues interviewed 81 fibromyalgia patients and 81 control subjects using a structured questionnaire. (2)
Wolfe wrote,(2 p.13) "In our current series, we asked patients to indicate if a drug or treatment had reduced their pain ... Of interest is that patients reported more benefit from 'life-style' modifications such as rest and relaxation than from other interventions. Chiropractic treatment also scored among the most effective measures" (emphasis mine). Wolfe F: The clinical syndrome of fibrositis. Am. J. Medicine 81 (suppl 3A): 7-14, 1986.
Osteoporosis:
Osteoporosis is a bone disease that occurs especially in women after the menopause in which the bones become very porous, break easily, and heal slowly. It may lead to curvature of the spine after the vertebrae collapse.
Can I receive Chiropractic care if I have osteoporosis? Yes you can. We have many different techniques that can help a variety of patients. Some of those techniques utilize low force manipulations that can be very effective on patients with osteoporosis.
Digestive Problems:
- Do you suffer from heartburn, gas, bloating, constipation, or diarrhea?
- Pharmacy shelves are lined with products that may provide temporary relief, but do they address the underlying cause of these symptoms?
- Have you ever been diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome or some other digestive disorder, and tried different treatments only to become discouraged at getting temporary relief at best?
- Is there an alternative to surgical correction? Often times there is.
Remember that every cell in your body has a nerve that goes to it. Your brain uses these nerves tell your skin cells, muscle cells, organs, gland tissues, and blood vessels what to do. Irritation to nerves affects how well the nerve can function. In some cases the nerve function may only be decreased slightly, while in other cases, the nerve function may be greatly decreased. Left alone, these functional decreases can lead to disease. If you remove the irritation to the nerve you reverse the cause to the problem.
If you have a pebble in your shoe, what do you do? You can ignore it and live with the pain. You can take medication to decrease the pain and irritation. Or, you can remove the pebble. There is only one logical choice.
